Coxhoe Pit Wheel

Brambledown Landscape Services Ltd have completed Coxhoe Village Green Landscaping Works. Coxhoe Village is located in County Durham and works comprised of the construction of a Pit Wheel memorial, block paving, stone walling, tarmac works, pathways, earthworks, turfing, tree & shrub planting and artwork features.

A new memorial to the former mining community, created by Brambledown, in Coxhoe was unveiled on Saturday 12 July: Durham Miners Gala day. The banner and brass band paraded from the Village Hall  through streets and across the green on a new tarmac path to congregate at the newly erected pit wheel, before setting off to join the Gala.

The first phase of a heritage scheme envisioned by the Parish Council, the erection of the pit wheel has been the culmination of years of effort by Coxhoe banner group. GNE&C was able to facilitate the project and landscape architect, MIchele MacCallam, designed a unique sculptural setting for the pit wheel. Surrounded by a yorkstone paved  area and incorporating a curved bench the design now forms a focus for the village.

One resident was heard to comment “this is so much better than the parade simply walking down Front Street and then getting in the bus to Durham”. Another resident was heard to say “this is so much better than the usual pit wheels you see and I really love the seat”.
