Church High School All Weather Pitch Opened

Church High School for Girls in Newcastle welcomed a celebrity visitor today for the opening of their state of the art All Weather pitch which was recently constructed by Brambledown. The all weather pitch will primarily be used for Hockey but it can be used for a number of sports. Brambledown were represented as main contractors by Kevin Blakelock and Ian White who were responsible for the construction of the artificial surface.

NEWCASTLE United midfielders Dan Gosling and Danny Guthrie delighted pupils at Church High School in Jesmond by performing the official opening of its new all-weather sports pitch.

The United players happily signed autographs, took part in a question and answer workshop and put the girls through their paces after demonstrating some of the exercises they do in training.

School sports captain, Rachel Scutt, 17, from Washington, said: “Sport plays a huge part in life at Church High.

“I was part of the netball team that made it to the national finals in Southampton last year and it was an incredible experience that I would love to repeat.

“We are very lucky to have these new facilities, giving every girl the chance to enjoy sport whether it is for fun or on a competitive basis.”

She added: “We were very excited to meet the two footballers – I know all the girls have been inspired by what they have learnt from the players and we will be putting their advice into practice very soon.”

The school hopes its state-of-the-art pitch will give Church High’s sporting stars of the future the opportunity to develop their skills across a wide variety of disciplines.

Caroline Fitzgerald, head of PE at Church High, said: “A huge thank-you must go out to Danny Guthrie and Dan Gosling for launching our new all-weather pitch, along with everyone who has helped turn these dream facilities into a reality.

“The boys are great role models for the pupils and offer a fine example of what can be achieved with hard work. This is such an exciting time for PE at Church High as we welcome in a new era with our outstanding new pitch.

“Having an all-weather area will give us the opportunity to develop our next-generation of hockey and netball players, as well as widening the curriculum to include everything from lacrosse to football.”

The opening of the new pitch also kicked off the school’s Health and Fitness Week, with a full programme of activities taking place every day.

The students will be taking part in events to promote healthy living and eating, including kick-boxing classes and making an art installation out of fruit.
